Chalet Patou Description

Chalet Patou is the most perfect place in town for a family or four friends. It is an extraordinarily roomy apartment actually on the Snow Square where the ski schools meet and most people start and finish their skiing day.

Chalet Patou is on the fourth floor – hence the incredible views – but don’t worry: there’s a lift (which takes you to the third floor, and you take the stairs to the fourth).

How ski-in, ski-out is it? Well, the piste ends twenty paces from the door, though if you hire your ski equipment from the neighbouring Mattis Sport Shop, you can leave your skis and boots there overnight, and cut the journey to five paces! The chalet has superb parquet floors which were not intended to be walked on in ski boots. Someone’s child last year forgot that and did several thousand pounds’ worth of damage, so rather than risk slapping our guests with a massive bill, we have to insist that no skis, boards or boots enter the chalet. Your equipment must be stored in the area outside the chalet, and boots just inside, warmed by boot warmers. Mattis will store equipment hired from them overnight. Alternatively Snowberry Slopeside will look after their kit free or your own for 5€ per day.

The sitting-dining room is gorgeous – roomy and light, with a Smart TV and far more space than is normal this close to the heart of Val d’Isère. There is a double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, and a bedroom that can have good single beds or an enormous double with an en-suite shower and separate wc. All have wonderful sunny views. Unless it’s snowing, in which case they have wonderful snowy views.

If you wonder about the name, patous are the magnificent Pyrenean Mountain Dogs used around here to guard the flocks against the wolves shepherds are no longer allowed to shoot. (Patou is also the nickname of Val d’Isère’s best skier since Jean-Claude Killy, but that’s another story).

Are there any downsides to Chalet Patou? You might worry that being at the very epicentre of the world’s best ski area inevitably means that it is not as silent as some of our chalets further out. If you are the type who has to put in earplugs if an owl dares hoot in a nearby oak, you might notice the occasional party-goer heading home across the piste four floors below, but with double glazing and electric shutters you’d have to strain your ears to hear them!

You can bring an additional child under 12 or toddler/baby. We can put a mattress in room 1 only but a cot in either bedroom.
