Staff Reviews

By YSE staff who completed a recent winter season in Val d’Isère.

Winter 2025-26

When I thought about doing a ski season I researched all of the different companies and found YSE. I knew straight away that I only wanted to do a season with them. The community aspect of YSE is unbeatable, from the get go you are part of a family – Fiona does a fantastic job at selecting 40 plus people who get along so well. I came out to Val d’Isere having skied a total of 5 days in my life – I was nervous that this would hold me back from making friends and fitting in but instead I found a group of girls who were all in a similar position to learn with and the advanced skiers were always keen to ski with us and pass on their tips! I’m happy to say I’m now a confident skier and absolutely love being on the mountain. Management at YSE are second to none, Annabel, Christina, and Murray are always on hand to support us, no problem is too big or too small. Being a chalet girl has equipped me with a skill set for life far beyond baking at altitude and making a tap shinier than you ever thought it could be; it has taught me patience, resilience and top notch communication skills. YSE has given me friends for life, and memories that I will cherish forever. If you’re thinking of doing a ski season I couldn’t recommend a company more than YSE, it really is the best of the best.

Deciding to do a season and being able to do it with YSE I think I got very lucky, they have been such a amazing company to work for and is run by a handful of very skilled and caring managers that honestly do want the best for you. The hours are fair and being able to ski 6 days a week are a good show of that, from the food to the staff accommodation there was plenty of surprises and memories made with similar minded staff members that can end up being lifelong friends. Thanks for the great times at YSE and opportunity to be able to do a season in such an amazing place.
Wian Dekker, Maintenance Rep, Winter 2025-26

As the sous chef, I learnt a lot this season. My day was usually structured around a couple of hours of prep work in the morning, cooking the staff dinner in the evening, preparing canapés, and helping the other chefs finish and plate up dinner. Cooking the staff dinner was especially lovely. Murray (the head chef) is always happy for you to try new or different things for the staff dinner, so that’s an amazing opportunity to learn new things. Preparing the actual dinner for guests was great, too. The atmosphere in the kitchen is absolutely great. Murray is a very relaxed and calm guy, which makes him not only a great chef, but also a great teacher. I would come back again in a heartbeat. I had the best time and would recommend everyone to do a season.

Spending the last 5 months in Val d’Isere working for YSE has truly been some of the best months of my life. Leading up to the season I was unsure what to expect but I can say that YSE has exceeded all my expectations. The company is run extremely well from John and Annabel’s many years of experience, which is a standout against its competitors. Another selling point of working for YSE is their central catering system which allowed us to ski for hours longer than other chalet companies. The work is hard but extremely rewarding and you are able to ski 6 out of 7 days of the week. Not only has the job been amazing, the people have been even better. Everyone employed is over 21 making everyone like-minded. If you’re after a season in one of the best ski resorts where you have a lot of fun, are able to ski as much as you like, don’t want to spend hours prepping food and feel extremely supported as an employee, YSE is the company for you.

Having been working in London for a few years, I had resigned myself to never doing a ski season, although it was something I had always wanted to do. My fears were around leaving my job, being at a different stage of life to most seasonnaires and a lack of experience in hospitality. YSE was the most perfect (and perhaps only) company I could have worked for, and I think that is mostly down to the people. All the staff are honestly some of the most fun, interesting people I’ve ever met and if you had told me before the season how unbelievably well a group of 45 people could get on, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can safely say that everyone here has made friends for life and I am so happy I made the leap and did a season with YSE. Coming back to my old life in London, I feel infinitely better equipped for life having learnt from experiences that most people are never lucky enough to have. I’m so grateful to YSE for my time here and everyone I have shared it with.

Working as the Commis Chef for YSE has been a fantastic experience. The kitchen team lead by Murray has been a great team to work with and there is a real sense of community within the kitchen and Chardons team as well as the company as a whole. The relationships we all developed as a group really made the experience. My role involved helping with kitchen prep throughout the week, assisting with sending out all the food to the chalets, baking cakes for the hotel and many other things. All these responsibilities gave me a broad range of skills and despite not having worked in a kitchen before, the training provided by Murray was excellent and allowed me to fit into the kitchen team seamlessly. The work/ski balance is really good and the option to ski was available every day apart from Sundays and the hours were easily manageable overall. I would highly recommend YSE and couldn’t imagine doing a season for any other company.

Having already been on a few ski holidays before the season, I’d caught the bug and knew I wanted to spend a full winter in the mountains and I’m so glad I did. It’s been such a special experience. The YSE recruitment team really get it right. They don’t just bring together a strong group of chalet hosts, they hire a group of friends. I was worried about what to expect as a chalet host but the first two weeks of training prepare you for everything you might face, from cooking and cleaning to hosting guests with confidence. By the end of the season, I’ve gained incredible experience, improved massively as a skier, and become part of a wonderful YSE family.

After going on a ski holiday and learning what chalet hosting and a ski season entails I spent many days researching chalet companies as I had made the decision I was going to do a season. YSE stood out by a mile in this search. I actually only applied to two companies with my heart set on YSE, I refused to believe I would work for anyone else. I very luckily got the job and I have never been more grateful to work for a specific company. From the way the training runs to the central kitchen set-up, allowing more time on the mountain, to the family style hands on managing of the staff, it all just works in favour of us. All of us have always said from the very beginning of the season that we have had such a great group of like-minded people that we would be happy to be stuck on any lift with any of them and easily have a conversation and feel comfortable. I know that this is how it is every year as YSE attracts the best type of people from staff to even guests. I worked in chalet d’Isere all season with 2 other hosts, we had so much fun together and the chalet genuinely turned into another home. I couldn’t have asked for a better season, if you are reading this and want to apply for YSE I promise it’s so worth it!

Do you love skiing?
Are you a hard worker?
Do you enjoy meeting other like-minded individuals?
If you answer yes to all of the above, YSE is certainly the company for you. YSE expects high standards from their staff and does an excellent job of employing those who take pride in delivering a professional and personal service. But, as with most, we are drawn here because of the skiing. When I was told that working for YSE meant you are able to ski on 6 days of the week, I didn’t really believe it. However, it couldn’t be more true. 6 days of skiing a week, every week, for an entire ski season. Not to mention that we are in Val d’Isère, a ski resort that not only offers unmatched piste skiing, but also unlimited off piste. Grabbing your skis and heading up the Olympique bubble never ever got old. I will miss this place dearly. YSE employs chalet hosts, two drivers and a maintenance rep. I was a driver. The other driver was my best mate from uni. The driver role may seem less sociable than hosting, but every morning, I delivered goods to 9 different chalets, interacting with many of the hosts, who later became friends for life, and countless guests. You also get to drive a yellow Land Rover Defender, probably the coolest vehicle in Val. While hosts work predominantly indoors, I loved the driver role because of how much time I spent outdoors. While hosting requires an immaculate attention to detail, the driver role is a logistical feat that is physically demanding. But it’s fun. Packing the suitcases into the landy on a Sunday is like playing Tetris. Driving up to NPP chalets after a dump of snow is like playing Mario Kart. Lugging heaving laundry bags up 3 flights of stairs without stopping is like a hyrox workout. It’s clear to me after a season that YSE stands out for a particular reason. Sure, the staff are great, the perks are even better, and the freedom to go skiing is outstanding. But it’s the management that sets YSE apart. John is hilarious, Annabel has an incredible way of maintaining a strict but fair working relationship, Christina runs a tight ship at Chardons, and Murray always has a smile on his face. Being a driver means that you build a strong relationship with all of them. I hope that after reading this message, I have convinced you to apply to work for YSE. I really have had the best 6 months of my life. Do it! Send off that application! You won’t regret it! Thank you YSE.
Theo Salsby, Driver, Winter 2025-26

I have loved working for YSE. It has been some of the best 6 months of my life. Having always wanted to do a ski season to actually get to ski more than once or twice a year, it has given me an amazing opportunity to ski 6 out of 7 days a week in the best resort ever. I have never skied so much powder in my life and probably never will again! Having the central kitchen run by Murray reduces the time you have to be in the chalet loads meaning less prep and cooking time and more skiing! However the other staff are what really make the difference, making the time in the chalets and around Val so enjoyable which credits the kind of people YSE attracts. The support from Annabel and John didn’t go unnoticed for me or any of the staff here all season and definitely helped our confidence through the season. I couldn’t recommend YSE more for the hours to go skiing, the people you meet and the support you get with the job you can’t get better!
Sophie Robson, Chalet Staff, Winter 2025-26

Working for YSE has been an unforgettable experience and I couldn’t have asked for a better season. A season with YSE has allowed me to meet friends for life, ski one of the best ski resorts in the world and make some amazing memories. The chalet host role has a great balance of work and skiing, with both a morning and evening shift, giving you the chance to ski most of the day, 6 times a week! The training weeks at the start of the season are rigorous meaning that even if you’re not initially super confident in the role, by the first week of guests you will be ready. Most importantly, the management team of Annabel, John, Murray and Christina provide consistent support to all the staff and make you feel confident to tackle any issues you might encounter over the season. To anyone thinking of applying for a ski season, I can’t recommend YSE enough.
Adam Ebdon, Chalet Staff, Winter 2025-26

If you’re reading this because you’re considering doing a ski season for YSE don’t think any more just apply. I applied having never been to Val d’Isère, never having heard of YSE and knowing absolutely no one and it has been without a doubt some of the best 5 months of my life. The many years of experience that Annabel, John, Murray and Christina have, make YSE an extremely well oiled machine that looks extremely well after all its parts. Murray’s cooking/food prep system gives you way more time on the mountain than other chalet companies as everything is delivered to you prepped in the morning so no need to stay/get in early and prep anything. Annabel’s experience managing 40+ chalet hosts every year and interest in you as a person makes her a great manager, any thought, question or trouble I had throughout the season was answered immediately and dealt with collaboratively. John is absolutely hilarious and his love for Val d’Isère and YSE makes him a terrific boss. The YSE guests are on the whole very lovely and interesting people which makes the work extremely rewarding. Throughout my season I’ve become a much better skier, made soooo many friends (I’m moving to London after because I’ll miss them too much if I go back to Aus!!) and had way too much fun. If you’re looking to ski 6 days a week, meet like-minded people who you’ll be friends with for life and have so so so much fun, then definitely apply to YSE.

Doing a ski season has been the best 6 months of my life. I didn’t really know what to do post university and have always loved skiing. Friends told me that YSE was the company to work for in Val d’Isere and I couldn’t agree more. When you arrive you are instantly introduced to a group of 40 like-minded people. Everyone has been really great and I have made friends for life. Working as a chalet host you meet guests from all over the world and it has taught me so many skills. I was so nervous about the cooking and making cakes as I am not a natural but the training gave me so much confidence and made me feel ready to cook for guests. On a ski season it is work hard play hard and you learn how to be constantly exhausted but I honestly wouldn’t change it. You get to ski everyday from midday and then if you wanted to you could go out every night. I couldn’t recommend doing a ski season more, it has been the best, I just might have to do another one !!!

Having always wanted to do a ski season, working for YSE in Val d’Isère more than lived up to expectations. Being surrounded by a great group of like-minded people made it such an easy place to settle into, and I’ve come away with friendships that will last well beyond the season. The balance between work and skiing was better than I imagined, with plenty of time on the mountain as well as the social side that comes with a season. It’s not always easy and there are definitely long days, but that’s all part of it and what makes it so rewarding. Looking back, it’s been an unforgettable few months and easily one of the best experiences I’ve had — I’d recommend it to anyone thinking about doing a season.

Doing a ski season was one of the greatest decisions I ever made. I couldn’t recommend YSE more as a company to work for. During my time at YSE I have learnt so many key skills such as how to cook and bake professionally whilst simultaneously entertaining a large chalet. Murray’s central kitchen system aids us as chalet hosts as the more complex components are prepared by him and delivered by the drivers. This allows us to have more time in the afternoon to ski and enjoy all the mountain has to offer. Working for YSE is definitely the job to go for if you’re a keen skier or really want to improve as the working hours work perfectly for a big day of skiing. With the support of Annabel, John, Murray and Christina and being surrounded by an amazing YSE team you’re guaranteed to have the best time and get the most of your season!

When I was looking for a chalet company to work for, YSE was highly rated and the reviews really sold it to me. I can firmly say that they were all true. This season has exceeded my expectations and I’ve loved every minute. YSE is the perfect example of working hard and playing hard, everyone’s like-minded and will get the job done, but are all here to have a great time and enjoy the 5 months. The early morning breakfast services can be tricky (especially after a night at doudoune..) but are worth it when you can be on the slopes before midday! The unique black-box set-up for dinner services means that there’s less pressure on the cooking, and that we can produce really high standards of food while focusing more on guest relations. I was in Maison du Rocher the whole season with my co-host, and we have met some lovely guests ranging from young families to friend groups and birthday parties. We were often invited to join in with our guests holidays – playing games in the chalet after dinner or even the occasional Folie/Cocos VIP! One thing I’ve really valued is having management in resort. As YSE is just Val d’Isere, having Annabel, John, Murray and Christina just a phone call away is really reassuring and I felt supported the whole season. They know chalet hosting inside out and have been so helpful and a great leadership team. They want us to have a fab time, which in turn means we’re motivated to do our best. My season has been incredible and I cannot thank YSE enough for the experience. Post university it has been amazing to do something completely different, and to ski pretty much every day! In resort there is a real camaraderie between YSE, being a large company you have 45 people from day one who are in the experience with you. I’ve made friends from all over the world, who I’m really going to miss seeing everyday. If you’re considering a season with YSE I cannot recommend it enough. It is a tiring job but so rewarding, and I’m going to miss it so much. Thank you for everything, for the best 5 months!

Making the decision to do a ski season was the one of the decisions I’ve ever made. The season was some of the most fun I’ve ever had and it wouldn’t be the same without YSE. Having 45 like-minded staff that you live, work and ski with created a fantastic atmosphere and great memories. Working as a pair in one of YSE’s chalets and knowing that each week we were there to make someone’s ski holiday unforgettable was extremely rewarding. Whilst you do have to work hard and provide a service that lives up to YSE’s high standards, you always have time to ski. We could get a great ski in 6 days out of 7 in the week, meaning we never missed a good powder day! Val d’Isère is the best resort you could do your season, a fantastic town with a great atmosphere along with world class skiing make sure that you’ll always have a great time. I genuinely think YSE is the best chalet company out there, and I can confidently say every single one of the 45 other YSE staff feels the same.
Robert Linzell, Chalet Staff, Winter 2025-26

This is my second season with YSE, the first was as a chalet host and this season with Murray in the central kitchen in Hotel Les Chardons as a chef. Firstly, Val d’Isere is an incredible resort, of course being in the Alps is always going to be stunning but Val is so special, a very cute, traditional but lively town and access to such amazing pistes with Tignes as well. When I started my first season I’d only ever snowboarded for a few days and never skied and now I love both so don’t let not being a master skier hold you back from applying, and no doubt you’ll find others in the same boat and enjoy the process of learning and falling for a little while (but if you are you can never get bored of what 300km+ pistes can offer)! And now my job as chef, which I also cannot recommend enough. I have Murray to thank completely for my new career as a private chef where he took me from a chalet host, to doing his cooking course, to working as a sous chef on a 41m private sailing yacht, to then returning to the wonderful mountains and keep learning with Murray! Our team of 4 in the kitchen prepare all the food for the 18 chalets, pack and send it out every morning and then I run the evening service in Les Chardons for up to 45 guests with another of our chefs. Murray and Christina are such a pleasure to work with and always create such a fun team!!
Tilly Abbott, Sous Chef, Winter 2025-26

After quitting my office job and making the long move from NZ, I can confidently say how happy I was with this decision. Reading the reviews from previous years and hearing about ‘dreams coming true’ made me skeptical about how great a season could be however, YSE did not fail and far exceeded my expectations. From the minute you arrive, you are made to feel welcome and that you belong. The initial training weeks are tough but ensure you are well equipped and confident for the season ahead, however, the support doesn’t stop there. The managers / head chef consist of Annabel, John, Christina, and Murray, and they couldn’t have picked a better team. They have precisely constructed a method to ensure the chalet work is easy and allows you to get the most out of your season. This ranges from how the food is delivered to the chalet pairings, to the staff accommodation. The managers living in the resort adds an additional level of support as it means they are only one phone call away. As the season comes to an end, I’m realising how grateful I am for this opportunity. I’ve made friends and memories for life!! To anyone reading this, I can’t praise and recommend working for YSE enough!!

I’d wanted to do a ski season straight out of school, but unfortunately COVID prevented that. In a way, I’m glad it did, as I wouldn’t have ended up working for YSE this year. From start to finish, the season has been brilliant. John, Annabel, Murray, and Christina really made it by providing guidance both at work and on the mountain. Being able to ski so consistently has also been a huge positive, especially as Val d’Isère has fantastic skiing both on and off piste. The driver role kept me fit all season, delivering food, laundry, and guests’ luggage. I’ve loved the role, as I got to spend most of my time working outdoors. Living with John was an experience in itself. Having been in Val d’Isère for so many seasons and having employed 45 staff every year, he somehow still manages to make you feel like this is the only year that matters. If you want to ski almost every day for five months, meet incredible people – both staff and guests – and work for a brilliant company, I couldn’t recommend YSE enough.
Milo Jeffery, Driver, Winter 2025-26

—————————-

Working for YSE has been an unforgettable experience. For anyone considering a ski season, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend YSE as one of the best companies to apply to. Unlike many others, YSE gives you the opportunity to ski most days and ensures your working days are as smooth and manageable as possible. One of the more amusing parts of the job is that YSE somehow convinces guests that I can cook – when in reality, my role is to heat the incredible meals prepared by professional chefs and present them beautifully on a plate. The recruitment process is relaxed and unique, yet they consistently bring together like-minded people who are genuinely fantastic to work with. The friendships I’ve made here are truly special and will stay with me for life. The guests and clients are also, for the most part, warm, friendly, and a pleasure to host. Annabel, Murray, and Christina are exceptional leaders who genuinely listen to feedback. If you’re ever unhappy or need a change, they do everything they can to create a positive and harmonious working environment where everyone feels supported. Some of my highlights this season include hiking up a mountain at 2am to watch the sunrise from the Tovière lift – something that might not sound appealing at first, but was honestly an unforgettable experience. Another major highlight has been the amount of skiing I’ve been able to enjoy each week, far more than what many other ski companies typically offer. YSE is the perfect chalet company to work for if you’re looking to build incredible friendships, ski regularly, and create lasting, unforgettable memories.
Emily Driscoll, Chalet Staff, Winter 2025-26

Working for YSE was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I had always wanted to do a ski season, and working for YSE completely exceeded all my expectations. The efficiency of Murray’s central kitchen allowed us chalet hosts to have the maximum amount of time on the mountain and fully enjoy everything Val d’Isère has to offer. YSE is also amazing at bringing together 40 other like-minded people who love skiing and socialising, and you’ll be sure to leave in May with friends for life. Being a chalet host does require hard work and the ability to always be on top form for guests, no matter how little sleep you may have had the night before! But it is all worth it. Annabel, John, Murray and Christina are all amazing and working for YSE has been one of the best experiences of my life. If you are considering doing a ski season, working for YSE is something you will not regret.
Nick Challacombe, Chalet Staff, Winter 2025-26

Working for YSE in Val d’Isère has been the most amazing six months. I have made memories for life and can truly say it’s been an absolute once in a lifetime opportunity. I applied to YSE because my brother had worked here for two seasons in previous years and loved it more than life! He told me it was the only place worth working – that YSE genuinely care about their staff, the set-up lets you ski every day and you meet incredible people. As it turns out, he was absolutely right. I worked in Hotel Les Chardons, where you host, cook breakfast and clean as part of a team of four alongside Christina. This was perfect for me as I loved working with others and personally felt it removed other pressures. Christina is an incredibly caring and fun manager and she looks out for you like you’re her own. My highlights of the season range from skiing in all conditions, dancing in P’tit Creux, yoga at Folie Douce, Monoski Day and Eat More Disco Nights at Black Sheep! If you’re thinking about doing a ski season, you absolutely must do it with YSE. You really won’t regret it!
Freya Hurlstone, Chalet Staff, Winter 2025-26

Completing a ski season with YSE has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Annabel, John, Murray and Christina and their seamless operation made working for YSE great fun and extremely fulfilling. They were there to lend a helping hand whenever needed, from the Visa worries, to any last minute kitchen concerns, help was always offered. Not only have I made some of the most amazing memories, but I have also made friends for life from all over the world. The opportunity to ski 6 days a week, for 5 months, in one of the best resorts in the world, is certainly a perk to the job. I worked in Chalet Otto throughout the entirety of my season. I really enjoyed working on my own as I was able to work at my own pace and to my own schedule. Guests ranged from lovely families to more lively younger groups, all of which were very kind and inclusive. YSE have been a brilliant company to work for. If you’re looking for a hard working but highly rewarding company to work for in Val D’Isère, I couldn’t recommend YSE enough.
Zoe Whittall, Chalet Staff, Winter 2025-26

Choosing to do YSE has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. The company really looks after you and always has your best interests at heart. The management team are great, and the work is enjoyable and rewarding. YSE does a brilliant job of making sure both guests and staff are happy, which creates an amazing atmosphere in an incredible resort. John and Annabel are also hugely experienced and well established in the resort, so you always feel like you’re in safe hands. The way Murray has organised the cooking for guests is really well thought through, and it means staff get a lot more time on the slopes compared to other companies. It also takes the pressure off, making each meal straightforward to deliver while still looking great, which is something guests always notice and appreciate. If you are looking to do a season I would not hesitate to recommend YSE.
Millie Crook, Chalet Staff, Winter 2025-26

Working a season in Val d’Isère has far exceeded my expectations. There’s always something to keep you occupied, whether it’s skiing, socialising, or working, so I never once felt bored. Even after six months on the slopes, I was still loving it on our final run of the season in May. I’ve made friends for life from all over the world and had the chance to meet and connect with a range of interesting guests along the way. YSE is, without a doubt, the best company to work for in Val d’Isère. The two weeks of training at the start of the season were thorough and well-structured, so we felt fully prepared and confident by the time our first guests arrived. John and Annabelle are the best managers I’ve worked for. Throughout the season, it was clear how much they genuinely care about their team and about us making the most of the experience. They’re also incredibly open and responsive to feedback, which made a real difference day-to-day.
Harriet Groves, Chalet Staff, Winter 2025-26

—————————-

Leaving university and watching everyone move into jobs in London, I remember feeling a pressure to follow the same path. If you’re even considering applying for YSE, you need to. Choosing to do a season with them is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I genuinely feel I learned more during this experience than I did in three years at university. That said, the job isn’t easy. Doing it well means juggling responsibility, and it can be exhausting at times. But the support from Annabel, John, Murray and Christina gives you everything you need to do it well. The role itself doesn’t require loads of experience. In my opinion, it’s much more about your attitude. I spent the whole season working in Chalet des Neiges, a 15-person chalet, alongside Rob. We had so much fun, and so many great guests who really made the weeks a laugh. A huge part of that comes down to how well the chalet partnerships are put together, which Annabel does brilliantly. I was initially sceptical that six months would be enough time to build strong friendships, but this season has proved it to me. I am leaving with friends for life. On top of all that, the opportunity to ski almost every day for five months is something you’d struggle to find anywhere else. I can’t recommend YSE highly enough. A huge thank you to Annabel, John, Murray and Christina for such an unforgettable experience. If you’re even thinking about it – DO IT.
Maddie Atkin, Chalet Staff, Winter 2025-26

Working a season with YSE was one of the best experiences of my life. Five months of living, working and skiing alongside people who quickly become some of your closest friends. Val d’Isère soon feels like a second home – a place where every walk through town or bus ride means bumping into a familiar face. YSE offers an incredible amount of support, which means you’re well set up to deliver a great experience for your guests while still making the most of your own season. With this support, there’s plenty of time to ski, enjoy the mountains, and make the most of life in resort. The management genuinely care about the YSE staff and go out of their way to make sure everyone feels supported and able to have the best season possible. I couldn’t recommend working for YSE more highly. It’s an unforgettable experience, and very likely will be the best five months of your life too.
