Chalet Aquila 102 Description

New to us this year,  Aquila 102 is the most perfect chalet for two, three or four people in a location which guarantees that you will spend more time on the slopes and less time reaching them than anyone else in Val d’Isère, except perhaps the pisteurs (whose office is next door).

There is a spacious sitting-dining room, with an open-plan kitchen. One room is definitely the master bedroom, with its large double bed (or two good-length singles) and an en-suite bath & shower room. The second bedroom has twin beds and is cosy, to say the least, but boasts its own shower room and separate wc. Its window opens not into the outside world, but into the living room. This typically French bit of ingenuity gives fresh air when you want it, and means you will awake to the smell of coffee, not the sound of the first skiers stamping past. It has a blind lest sensitive sleepers be disturbed by the flashing lights on the Nespresso machine.

The Aquila building’s USP is of course its position. At the Rond Point des Pistes, you either take a few paces up to the nursery slopes then enjoy a few seconds’ downhill glide to the rapid bubbles up both Bellevarde and Solaise, or you choose a minute’s walk across the bus stops to a similar starting point. Either way, you can eat a leisurely breakfast and still be first on the slopes. Even better, after skiing you ski right to the door, whichever piste you’ve finished on. And all of Val d’Isère’s free buses stop here, so access to La Daille, Le Fornet or Tignes could not be easier if you don’t want to ski.

The Snowberry hire shop is literally 20m away and Coco’s, Val d’Isère’s liveliest après-ski spot, is 100m (don’t worry – it closes at 9pm, and we never hear it). About the same distance is L’Étincelle, widely considered the best restaurant on Val d’Isère’s pistes, while the popular little bar-restaurant La Gourmandine is just across the road. There’s even a supermarket next door, so in fact you could spend a very happy week here without ever going into the main village, though should you want to it involves one stop on the free and frequent buses or a five-minute stroll across the nursery slopes.
